About Ascot

Brought to you by DarkStar Discos, the Ascot marquee hire experts.

Ascot is a small town in East Berkshire, England, 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Windsor, 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Bracknell and 25 miles (40 km) west of London.[1] It is most notable as the location of Ascot Racecourse, home of the Royal Ascot meeting, and is reportedly one of the most valuable towns in England when taking into account the average house price.[2] It is also one of the most expensive towns in Britain to rent a property.[3] The town comprises three areas: Ascot itself, North Ascot and South Ascot. Ascot is in the district administered by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, a unitary authority. Ascot, South Ascot and a small part of North Ascot are in the civil parish of Sunninghill and Ascot, although most of North Ascot is in the civil parish of Winkfield, in the district of Bracknell Forest.

Facilities tend to be geared towards the racecourse, but there is a small range of shops in the wide High Street. Most of the expected facilities one would expect to find in a small town are here, including a supermarket, petrol station and many cafes (including a Starbucks and a Costa, a Subway, Tesco Express and Budgens). Most buildings are post-war with flats above the ground floor retail space. Heatherwood Hospital (filming location for Carry on Matron) was at the western edge of the town.

It is one of the leading racecourses in the United Kingdom, hosting 13 of Britain's 36 annual Group 1 horse races. Ascot currently stages 26 days of racing over the course of the year, comprising 18 flat meetings held between the months of May and October inclusive. It also stages important jump racing throughout the winter months. The Royal Meeting held each June, remains a major draw, its highlight being The Gold Cup. Lily Hill Park –
The park is a Green Flag awarded 23-hectare public open space, located to the north east of Bracknell and less than a mile from the town centre and about 4 miles from Ascot. A comprehensive history of the house and park, which was originally formed as a 19th century 'gentleman's residence', is available in the leaflet 'Lily Hill Park - The making of an English Landscape’.

In more recent years the park has seen locals successfully fight off a bid to build residential houses on the lawns of the building in the 1990s and the restoration of some of the key Victorian features of Lily Hill Park thanks to a grant received from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2001.

Attractions include:

  • Historic parkland - an original yew-walk, traditional orchard and mighty Wellingtonia at Forester’s Hill
  • Woodland - fine stands of beech trees and oaks to the east and a rare collection of hardy hybrid rhododendrons and azaleas in Starch Copse to the west
  • Formal gardens - an Edwardian water garden, a pond and a ‘ha-ha’ sunken fence lie to the west
  • England's longest picnic bench (carved from a single piece of wood)
  • Key features including a Green Man sculpture welcoming you to the park and a story-telling throne where visitors can capture snapshots of their day-to-day lives

Ascot Today

Brought to you by DarkStar Discos, the Ascot marquee hire experts.

Though a pretty Berkshire town in its own right, it's fair to say that Ascot is dominated by its spectacular racecourse. Certainly, one of the world's finest and most famous courses, Ascot attracts over half a million visitors each year. Ascot Racecourse can trace its history back to 1711 when Queen Anne arranged the first meeting. Today's recently redeveloped racecourse is a sight to behold – with enormous terraced stands and immaculate grounds.

Mid-June is prime racing time. While there are meets throughout the year at Ascot, nothing compares to Royal Ascot – an incredible display of world class horse racing, extravagant hats, and socialising on an epic scale. You'll also see members of the Royal Family process each day at 2pm during Royal Ascot – a tradition that dates back to 1825.

Away from the races you'll find an attractive town with plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as lively bars and music venues. Fitting perhaps, as Ascot is where Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding was born.
