Waltham Bishop’s Waltham is a medieval town just southeast of Winchester. The place got its name from the Bishop’s Waltham Palace which was founded by Henry of Blois way back in the 12th century. The palace served as a residence to the Winchester bishops and has hosted a lot of royal visitors. In 1644, the place was destroyed as ordered by Cromwell. However, the ruins are still worth a visit. The town is also well known for it’s amazing Norman church. The history continues as the towns, boutiques. and restaurants are often based in old buildings dating from the 17th and 18th century. History is written everywhere in Bishop’s Waltham from its impressive ruins to the medieval buildings. This is especially seen in the well-preserved high street that has different types of salons, restaurants, shops, and cafés. There’s also a working mill and vineyard you can visit, it feels like a step back in time. Bishop’s Waltham is widely connected to the Napoleonic Wars where prisoners were being held captive within it including the French admiral.
