The town centre suffers traffic congestion, with the A4 through the town close to gridlock during rush hour, due to single-file traffic between Curzon Street and Wood Street, with eastbound traffic having priority. A northern bypass road (part of the A3102 road) was completed in 2001. Road - Calne is equidistant (12 mi or 19 km) from the M4 motorway at Junction 16 (Wootton Bassett/Swindon West) to the northeast of Calne, and the westbound M4 junction 17 just north of Chippenham to the northwest.

The nearest main passenger airport is Bristol, 38 mi (61 km) to the south west.

Rail -

Bus -
In March 2007 Calne was designated as a National Express coach stop on route 403 from Bath to London via Heathrow Airport. The service runs once a day and has wheelchair-accessible coaches. Marden House Calne -
Marden House was home to the Wharfinger who handled traffic on the Wilts and Berks Canal, which terminated here. When local people raised funds and obtained grants to renovate the building and convert it to a community and arts centre, Prince Charles gave his support by visiting in 1988 (see the plaque on the front of the building), and the centre was opened in 1990. Marden House may surprise you: visitors often find it has more charm and more possibilities than they imagined. Providing a high degree of seclusion, the Marden House Centre is suited to a wide variety of uses, from private parties, wedding celebrations, business meetings and exhibitions to public performances. Make the Centre your own by decorating and giving it your personal touch. For your special day they offer a complete Centre package, giving access to all areas from 6pm on Friday until 10.00 am on Sunday which gives time to set up on Friday and clear away on Sunday morning, leaving Saturday just for you although the party must end by midnight. The current hire rate for this package is £895. The magical garden will certainly give an added wow factor to your day. Your photographs will be a lasting memory and your guests will be amazed when they see this hidden gem. You can even put up your own marque, gazebos and have a hog roast or barbecue.

Top Things to do in Calne

The Calne Heritage Centre - In the early 1990s, as a result of an initiative of the Calne Town Council and the Calne Project, a working party was set up to pursue the aim of establishing a heritage centre in Calne. Its first achievement was to mount an exhibition in 1992 called 'A Taste of Harris' covering the history of the Harris bacon industry in Calne. It was a great success and some of the material is now on display in the Centre. For 10 years, the working party sought to find suitable premises for the Centre eventually settling on an arrangement with the Calne Town Council to lease the Carnegie Building. Until the opening of new building in 2001, the Carnegie building was the home of the library in Calne. After the library moved, Calne Town Council acquired the building from the County. Recognising the strong local feeling that the building should remain in public use and its suitability for the Heritage Centre, it has been their home since the official opening by the Earl of Kerry on the 5th of October 2004.

Silbury Hill near Calne -
The largest artificial mound in Europe, mysterious Silbury Hill compares in height and volume to the roughly contemporary Egyptian pyramids. Probably completed in around 2400 BC, it apparently contains no burial. Though clearly important in itself, its purpose and significance remain unknown. Silbury Hill is part of the Avebury World Heritage Site, and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There is free parking for around 15 cars but there are no designated disabled spaces and it cannot accommodate coaches or minibuses. Information panels in the viewing area give insight into the history and construction of this fascinating structure. Please note there is no public access to the hill in order to protect the site and its sensitive archaeology.

Stonehenge, near Calne -
Walk in the footsteps of your Neolithic ancestors at Stonehenge – one of the wonders of the world and the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe. Explore the ancient landscape on foot and step inside the Neolithic Houses to discover the tools and objects of everyday Neolithic life. Visit the world-class exhibition and visitor centre with 250 ancient objects and come face to face with a 5,500-year-old man. Iconic symbol of Britain, a walk around the Stone Circle is the centrepiece of any visit to the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site.
