About Devizes

Brought to you by DarkStar Discos, the Devises marquee hire experts.

Devizes is a market town in the centre of Wiltshire, England and is well served by DarkStar Discos, the Devises marquee hire experts. It developed around Devizes Castle, an 11th-century Norman castle, and received a charter in 1141 permitting regular markets, which are held weekly in an open market place. The castle was besieged during the Anarchy, a 12th-century civil war between Stephen of England and Empress Matilda, and again during the English Civil War when the Cavaliers (Royalists) lifted the siege during the Battle of Roundway Down. Devizes remained under Royalist control until 1645, when Oliver Cromwell attacked and forced the Royalists to surrender. The Wadworth Brewery was founded in the town in 1875. Standing at the west edge of the Vale of Pewsey, the town is about 10.5 miles (16.9 km) southeast of Chippenham and 11 miles (18 km) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. For all your event-planning needs, contact DarkStar Discos, the Devises marquee hire experts.

In 1857 the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway built its Devizes Branch Line eastward to Devizes, from Holt Junction on its line between Chippenham and Weymouth. In 1862 the Great Western Railway extended its Reading to Hungerford line westward to meet this line, providing a direct route between Paddington and the West Country through Devizes. Today the nearest railway stations are at Melksham, Chippenham and Pewsey.

Devizes has bus connections to surrounding towns including Swindon (via Avebury), Trowbridge, Salisbury, Bath and Chippenham, each of which have rail services. Canal -
The Kennet and Avon Canal was built under the direction of John Rennie between 1794 and 1810, linking Devizes with Bristol and London.[35] Near Devizes the canal rises 237 feet (72 m) by means of 29 locks, 16 of them in a straight line at Caen Hill. In the early days the canal was lit by gas lights at night, enabling boats to negotiate the locks at any time of day. The canal fell into disuse after the coming of the railways in the 1840s but was restored between 1970 and 2003 for leisure uses. The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust run a museum at The Wharf in Devizes. The town is the starting point of the annual Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon.

Cycling -
National Cycle Route 4 follows the canal towpath through the town.

Top Things to do in Devizes

Caen Hill Locks Devizes -
The Kennet & Avon Canal has awesome examples of canal engineering. The 16 locks that form the steepest part of the flight at Caen Hill are not only a scheduled ancient monument, they are an Olympic sized challenge every boater must do. This 'wonder of the waterway' is literally a rite of passage! (Or should that be a flight of passage?) Caen Hill (pronounced ‘cane’ by the way), is one of the longest continuous flight of locks in the country - a total of 29 locks with a rise of 237 feet over 2 miles with a 1 in 44 gradient for anyone who's counting! But you don’t have to be a boater to appreciate this beautiful waterway. Visit the welcome boat, The Admiral, for activity sheets on pond dipping, local walks and information and stories about the locks before taking a stroll over to our newly planted, Diamond Jubilee Wood. If you're thinking of travelling up (or down) the flight you'll need to talk to the volunteer lock keepers as they have the experience to make sure the water is conserved during your passage.

The Wiltshire Museum Devizes -
Set in the historic market town of Devizes the Wiltshire Museum is housed in Georgian and Victorian buildings – all Grade II listed. The Museum has been located here since 1874 and contains the largest collection of Early Bronze Age gold ever put on public display in England. Award-winning displays transform public understanding of the era and feature 500 Stonehenge period objects, including 30 pieces of gold treasure, together with archaeology, art, natural history, local history, and an Archive and Library which is open to the public. There is a platform lift for those not able to manage the stairs. The Museum is open throughout the year for visitors and researchers and in addition to the permanent galleries offers a variety of events, lectures and special exhibitions for all ages. The Wiltshire Museum is owned and run by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, a Registered Charity and Company Limited by Guarantee. The Society was formed in 1853 to establish a Museum and Library and for the promotion and study of objects connected with Wiltshire.

Avebury Manor, near Devizes –
An ancient stone circle, museum and manor house sit in the heart of the Avebury World Heritage Site. At Avebury, the world's largest prehistoric stone circle partially encompasses a pretty village. Archaeologist Alexander Keiller excavated here in the 1930s, and there is a museum bearing his name. Arranged in two parts, the Alexander Keiller Museum is divided into the Stables Gallery, displaying archaeological treasures from across the World Heritage Site, and the Barn Gallery, a 17th-century threshing barn housing interactive displays and children's activities that reveal the story of this ancient landscape. Avebury Manor, on the edge of the village, was transformed in a partnership between the National Trust and the BBC, creating a hands-on experience that celebrates and reflects the lives of the people who once lived here.
