About Eton

Brought to you by DarkStar Discos, the Eton marquee hire experts.

Eton is a historic town and civil parish in the ceremonial county of Berkshire, but within the historic boundaries of Buckinghamshire, lying on the opposite bank of the River Thames to Windsor and connected to it by Windsor Bridge. The parish also includes the large village of Eton Wick, two miles west of the town, and has a combined population of 4,980, reducing to 4,692 at the 2011 Census. Since 1998 it has been part of the unitary authority of Windsor and Maidenhead.

The parish of Eton can be traced back to the Domesday book where we find Walter, the son of Other, owning the manor of Eton, comprising twelve hides, of which eight carucates (A carucate was the land that a plough team of eight oxen could work in a year) were arable land. The manor previously belonged to Queen Eddid, the wife of Edward the Confessor.

The town is best known as the location of Eton College, a famous public school.

Eton Today

Brought to you by DarkStar Discos, the Eton marquee hire experts.

The town of Eton is in the county of Berkshire, and on the north bank of the River Thames across from Windsor, west of London in south-west England. While Windsor (and Windsor castle) attract very great numbers of visitors, a stroll across the river to visit Eton is also recommended: the high Street in Eton features some interesting historical buildings and shops, and there are views back across the river to the castle.

Eton is of course best known for its internationally famous public school (i.e. fee paying), Eton College - which itself is usually referred to simply as Eton...Eton College dates from 1440 and for several centuries has been the school of choice 'for the great and the good' of English society, and a great number of politicians and captains of industry in Britain were educated at Eton.

The fine historical buildings of Eton College itself are also a pleasure to see - the main buildings that can be seen by visitors are the College School Yard, the College Chapel and the Museum of Eton Life - all visits are by Guided Tour (charge payable) - see visit Eton College for details of times and costs.
